CHAPTER 1


vessels:
a hollow utensils for building something

stays: a strong rope or wire that used to steady or brace something

booty: money or goods taken in war or by robbery

prow: the bow of a ship

quartering winds: wind coming from direction behind and to the side.

baubles: an object of little value

shaft: the long handle of a weapon (as a spear)

head wind: a wind blowing in a direction opposite to course especially of a ship or craft

hull: the frame of body or the ship

scudded: to move or run swiftly

brow: the ridge on which eyebrow grows/ the upper edge of of a steep slope

inhabitants: one who lives permanently in a place

marrow: inner part of the bone

ogres: an ugly giant of fairly tales and folklore that eats people

provisioned: something provided; a measure or other means for meeting a need.

sorcery: the art, practices, or spells of a person who is supposed to exercise supernatural powers through the aid of evil spirits; black magic; witchery.

ethical: pertaining to or dealing with morals or the principles of morality; pertaining to right and wrong in conduct.




Chapter 7

loom:
If a worrying or threatening situation or event is looming, it seems likely to happen soon.

skiff:
any of various types of boats small enough for sailing or rowing by one person.

spur: If one thing spurs you to do another, it encourages you to do it.

haughtily: disdainfully proud; snobbish; scornfully arrogant

gorged: A gorge is a deep, narrow valley with very steep sides, usually where a river passes through mountains or an area of hard rock

prophesy: to foretell or predict.

glut: If there is a glut of something, there is so much of it that it cannot all be sold or used

venerable: commanding respect because of great age or impressive dignity

intoxicating: to make enthusiastic; elate strongly, as by intoxicants; exhilarate
