Before Chapter 4 Ulysses is another interesting character in the book by being courageous and like a powerful and trustful leader. He is generous and very thoughtful especially for his mates and his crew to lead them through a rough voyage. He is a very supportive leader and is considerate towards his people instead of being selfish and being narrow-minded towards his side. He is also called Odysseus and is a aggressive and stubborn looking person. He has many advantages towards him by having power, wealth, and is very genuine. He looks quite old but with his experience he travels with great vulnerable creatures against him he still overcomes these circumstances. He is an unforgettable leader that has never gave up despite danger and he fought for his rights and for his people. Even though he was a great leader with great talent and skill he is very cocky and arrogant in the other side. So I can't really conclude that he is a perfect leader Summary of Chapter 4 Ulysses and his men were very drowsy and hungry as they were awoke up. Ulysses gave orders to his men as they sailed the boat towards the island to find their foods to fill their starving stomaches. However, to reward themselves for this great feast and for the plenty of foods they had to fight the most deadly giants called Cyclops. Cyclops were another creature with only one eye and was enormously big that it was unstoppable to face or to cope him with strength and agility. They were reluctant to fight with their settled mind which they could probably outwit them with. They were walking along the steep and tall mountains as they reached their destination for food. The men were concentrated on their meal that they devoured on the Cyclopes' farm animals like sheep. As they noticed the Cyclops stampede towards them they were unexpectedly ambushed the shocked Ulysses and his crew. The Polyphemus astonished them as he gulped and gulped their 2 intimidated and sailors. These sailors were frightened as they trembled themselves in fear and cowered back. The Polyphemus swoop his hand for another member of the Ulysses' crew when Ulysses spoke with confidence to drink some wine. The Cyclops were interested as they gulped and gorged on the wine as they soon got addicted to it. Finally and as expected he was asleep as Ulysses and his 8 survived crew escaped as they also attacked the Cyclop when it was during it's sleep. The sound was wild and massive that they may have flinched towards their ship as they tried to continue on with their journey. Ulysses has struck the Cyclop, Polyphemus in the eye as it jerked and scram in pain. Then Ulysses' final taunt made god Poseidon angry. As he taunted him Polyphemus prayed to his father to avenge and to punish Ulysses for the causes and the responsibility. Even though, Ulysses and his men survived barely his journey will be toughen because of the Poseidon the god of sea's punishment to fail him from completing the journey. Summary of Chapter 5 Ulysses and his crew were again sailing their boats as they were heading towards their own home. He was relaxed and felt safe after he defeated the mighty and the outrageous beast called Polyphemus. However the corrupted Polyphemus had prayed to Poseidon which lead them to the Aelous' island. Ulysses and his men were suspicious and felt extraordinary because it was colored in bronze and was magnificently attracting them near it. As they were lured they planned to stay behind and rest for a while for the new journey. Aelous was the Poseidon and Zeus' Jailer that kept other people that landed their in imprisonment. As Ulysses and his men decided to go to the island they were halted by Aelous. Aelous greeted them and discovered Ulysses' speciality and other private stuffs about him. As Ulysses told every story and his adventure and Aelous was impressed by his ability. So for the reward for his adventure he gave him the gale wind for protection and help against other storms and difficulties. Ulysses was grateful as he promised Aelous to keep it protected from his crew. The moment he came back his crew were suspicious and were full of greed to find out what it was. It has been suspecting because he was securing it for 4 days. So when Ulysses was asleep they thought it was treasure and opened the package as the magic was disappeared. As the sound blew, Ulysses heard it and became alert by the sound. He was disappointed and angry and couldn't resist himself from anger. So he went back to Aelous and pleaded for another one sympathetically. But poor Ulysses blew his chance as Aelous rejected him. And Ulysses was reluctant to start his journey towards him home with uncertainty and risk. Why did Ulysses' men betray him and open the bag of winds from Aeolus? What happened to those men? They betrayed him because they were so curious about what was inside the bag. They believed that Ulysses wanted power and wealth in order to remain strong. Since they disliked about what they thought they decided to open the bag and try to steal the treasure. They were curious because they were very suspicious because Ulysses was keeping it secure for so many days. So they risked themselves in by blowing the chance when they don't even need to face the danger. So that's how they betrayed Ulysses. Also the wind was blown out because the wind carried them out as their return. It was such a loud noise that Ulysses was awake from his deep sleep and was very disappointed. The men at the other hand were worried and frightened because they were blown out by the strong wind that blew. What would it be like to live on Cannibal Beach? What problems would it create to have a quicker cycle of day and night? How do you think this kept Ulysses from discovering what the trees were? I think living on Cannibal Beach would feel very different because the night and the days have the different time rotation like our world. It is very different by being short and I think I will be unable to adjust quickly like Ulysses and his men. They must be very nervous and frightened of the place because it seems mysterious and weird. So I think that kept Ulysses from discovering what the trees were by this strange day and night rotations.
Chapter 6 Ulysses and his crew was forced to go to The Land of the Dead as Circe had told them to in order to reach their home. They were headed to the Land of Dead to earn the decree to go to the home as Circe had mentioned earlier. It wasn't a easy task because their men were already half intimidated and frightened about the Dead Land. They were terrified of death as many of the famous legends like Achilles told them about their misery towards their death. There were misty looking ghosts that seemed to wander and moaning. One of the ghosts were his mother and told him that he will eventually die too. As he was consoled with the ghosts he later received his approval to go back to Ithca his country.
Journal Entry #4 Ulysses - In Chap. 9 The Wandering Rocks, Ulysses has to decide what to do for himself. All of the advice that he has been given turns out to be useless. What does he decide to do? Have you ever been in a situation that required you tomake an important decision on you own? How did you decide what to do? Ulysses had decided to be tied up in the poll of the boat and make the crew row the boat with their ears closed. Ulysses made a bad choice but was brave by risking his life to hear these painful stuffs. I have also been in this situation but not as quite difficult as Ulysses' task. I have decided to always make up my words and do something risky like making a fool of myself. It has been humiliating but not much as Ulysses' decision.
Journal Entry #5
Ulysses has gone through much physical and mental hardship. Through all of this he
has been determined to return to Itacha. What people and/or places in your life would
you be willing to fight as hard as Ulysses to get to/see. Explain your answer.
I would take a flight to Johns Hopkins University to receive better education and learn how to deal business. I would sacrifice anything to go to Johns Hopkins University for my future, my success and for my family. I hope I could dedicate or contribute something back for my family because they have invested a lot of money and supported me. So in exchange, I will go to a good university to study and go internationally to study within different levels for myself to compete. I am looking forward to progress and reach my goal.
