Ulysses Chapter 3 Summary
Ulysses and his men landed on the shore of Libya, the land known to be where a young god of sleep called Morpheus played. Morpheus was told to lay death inside sleeping people by his father, Hypnos. However, he started laying the bright pictures, also called the ‘dreams’, into them as Persephone’s offer. When Morpheus realized giving out dreams to the human-beings made everyone happy, he asked Persephone for a purple and black flower with fire-red streak that makes sleep. So, as Ulysses and his men fell asleep on the shore of Libya, tired and unstrengthened, Morpheus helped their nightmares fade. However, it was difficult for morpheus to fade Ulysses’ nightmare of his future voyage since he was a great hero who gods could not easily control. Some people of this land laid Louts flowers near Ulysses and his men, so they could eat the flowers when they woke up. These lotus flowers had ability to make people sleep and not wake up easily. Yet, Ulysses tried hard to not eat the lotus nor smell its fragrance to get out of this sleeping land. He used all his strength to bring his men out of the island and put them on the deck of the ship. Finally, Ulysses and his men escaped from a mysterious land of lotus-eaters.
Ulysses Chapter 4 Summary
Ulysses and his men made a landfall on a small, mountainous land to fill their stomach with some food. They didn’t know this fact, but this island was the very worst and scary island where any human-beings could have landed. Since the crew of Ulysses' ship was very hungry, they tried to catch the giant goats those were running across the island. The twelve members of the crew and Ulysses finally captured several giant goats. However, they soon realized that the island was the Cyclops’ island and the goats belonged to a very mean, crude giant called Polyphemus. Yet, none of the crew or Ulysses could escape because they were trapped inside Polyphemus’s room with a door covered with huge rock. On the first day the Ulysses and his men met Polyphemus, only two of the twelve men were eaten by Polyphemus. But, when Polyphemus warned the other men that he would end up with Ulysses at last, everyone started to worry and made a plan. Ulysses and his men put the end of a sword on fire and poked Polyphemus’s eye with the sword’s sharp end. In addition, Polyphemus was a giant with only one eye. When Polyphemus became totally blind, Ulysses and his men hung on to the sides of the giant goats to not let the Cyclopes find them. They successfully reached their ship except one of the crew who was killed by Polyphemus during the run. When Ulysses felt safe in his own ship, he acted very braggingly. He told Polyphemus his real name and made Polyphemus pray to the god for revenge. This revenge actually happened for next several years to Ulysses.
