>>Write a paragraph about a girl named Dot, but use no letters with "i" or "j".

*Once, long ago, there was a damsel named Dot. Dot had a rare talent. She could make any doodad evaporate away and then congeal once more. There was no fake magic to it. She just had this weird power. Now, you may think, "Then where does that doodad go to?" Well, from our eyes, we cannot see it. However, Dot could. Throughout her childhood days, she would, now and then, steal a light snack from a store... but one event happened, that made her change her rules, back to her honest self. To Be Continued....

Free Writing #1

The Gum and Hair Mission.

It was a peaceful morning. Layla was walking to school with nothing particular on her mind. The street was fairly clean, and the trees, which bent over from the fences of the houses, tickled her checks as she brushed by. Then, a huge gush of wind whipped by, making her eyes water. Her binders and papers she was holding had been blown to the ground. She bent down to collect her school work. As her long hair slid down her shoulder, she noticed a pink spot in her hair. "What's this?" she asked herself. Grabbing a chunk of her chocolate brown hair, she saw a pink blob of GUM. Now, GUM is no normal gum. GUM is a super chewy, super sticky, super bubbly, and super elastic-ky gum. What is Layla going to do with this situation?! Find out on the next Free Write! :D

Assignment PDF #28 "Onion":

>>Describe an onion to someone who has never seen or tasted one.

*It may depend on the person, but for me a raw onion is crispy and has a spicy sensation that tingles your nose. It has a round shape with a little blunt point at the top. When you see it at first, the onion is brown. An onion has many layers of light hazel skin and then many more layers of white watery ONION. If you cut it, rings of that white would be made.

Assignment PDF #83 "White Swirls"

>>What is your interpretation of this photograph. Turn it upside-down and sideways for different views. What is it? What could it mean? How and where was it taken?

*It looks like a sunglasses-wearing face. I think it is a photograph taken by moving the camera around while taking a bulb of light. I think it means to be energetic or frantic.

*Partner Chanel Kim: It looks like a sunglasses-wearing monkey. I think it was taking by moving a razor and a click of the camera. I think it represents a poster of a monkey show or a comic showing the monkey saving the world.

*Partner Annie Namkoong: I think it is a man with sunglasses. I think it was taken of a moving light. I think it represents hope and faith.

*Partner Michelle Lee: I think this picture looks like a turtle crossed with a bird, that is turning its back on us, and looking upwards. I think it means to fly up and progress slowly. This was probably taken during night, when the lights were turned off.

>>Imagine that this is a newly discovered animal. Describe it.

*The animal has a long white tail that bends this way and that. It follows wherever the animal goes. Also, this creature seems to have no eyes- like a worm. However, the lack of sight would be made up by the animals super sense of hearing and touch. It can even hear and feel the moving air that an object makes when it moves.

Journal Entry #6

>>Describe your bedroom the way you want it to be.
A perfect room for me would be a roomy room of pearl white wall paper. This room would have the door on the left of the wall, from the view of the person entering the room. In the room, the left side would have a huge fluffy bed in the corner fit for me and my huge stuffed bears, with a cute multi-colored rug under it. Right besides my bed, there would be a humongous wooden, but smooth, hazelnut colored desk where I can work with my computer on one side and have spacious room on my right for working with my big textbooks or papers. The desk would also have shelves surrounding it; reaching the ceiling and filling the whole right part of the wall. I would use it for storing my books, small stuff animals, and whatnot. However, one thing I am sure of is that I would have a citrus-scented jelly to decorate and give off a good scent in the room. The chair for my desk would be gigantic too- enough for two people to have a seat. With a little kick of my foot, the chair would spin and I could fall into my bed just like that. To get to my closet, I would have to open a door on the wall to the right of the desk, which would open to a small hall, about three to four meters long and two meters wide. There would be a small desk for my hair and make-up accessories on the left, where part of the wall was taken away for the table. All the other side of the wall would be closets and places to hand my clothes. On the other end of the hall would be my very own bathroom. It would have a toilet on the right, a sink on the left, and a bath tub on the facing wall. Lastly, the wall that surrounds my bed would be full of posters and post-its that I feel is important, interesting, or appealing. That would be my perfect room.

>>Fatima is a very spoiled teenage girl. Show that she is spoiled, by describing what happens when she doesn't get a car for her birthday.

*After throwing her expensive lamp and a slap at her father in their huge living room, Fatima raced up the stairs, tripped, gathered herself back up, restoring her perfect image, and continued to run up the long, coiled, marble steps. After realizing she could have used an elevator, she stopped at floor two and a half, came back down a few steps to the second floor, and stabbed the pearl elevator button. The elevator was still on the fifth floor, taking a very long time to gradually make it's way to Fatima. By that time, the button was already damaged by the consecutive punches of Fatima's finger. She stomped in the elevator and once more stabbed the sixth floor button. She impatiently crossed her arms and tapped with her foot until she arrived to her floor. The whole floor was her's. The hanging-out room, the bedroom, the computer room, the doll room, and so forth. She stormed into her princess bedroom, slammed the door, and locked herself in. The house maid knocked on her door asking if she wanted some lemonade. "NO! SHUT UP! GET AWAY!!" was her reply. The only way to stop this temper of her's was to do what she wanted. Finally, the father gave in, crept upstairs and said softly to her through her door, "What car do you want?"

>>Write a paragraph about a cat attacking something, but don't use the words hiss, scratch, or pounce.

*The ginger striped cat slowly approached the ball of yarn. It poked one side of the ball and so it slowly rolled backwards. Startled by this, the cat backed away. It had a new enemy she needed to tackle. slowly but gradually faster, she flipped in the air and landed with a great gymnastic pose on the opposite side of the yarn. Slapping it with one paw, she observed the roll once more. Realizing that it is backing away and is actually scared of her, she yowled and started to hit it consecutively, balancing on her two back feet. Finally, the ball was torn apart, strings coming loose. It was her win.

>>Describe what you feel right now using your sense of smell. Id you fell frustrated, write about what your frustration smells like. Use vivid words. Don't skimp on adjectives.

*In the morning, if the class is full of girls, a mix of smells come to my senses. Different shampoo brand fragrances waft through the air and the smell of metal and plastic from our computers lurks by. There is a strange whiff of potato in the air. Where did it come from? I don't know. It may be from the pancake my classmate brought in. All these scents mixed together is surely an eerie scent.

Art Poem

0841.jpg

Louise Dunn Yochim (American, 1909), “Abstract”

List:
Life
Happy
Hardships
Sadness
Obstacles
Arm
Comfort
Support
Window

***

Poem:

Abstract of Hard Work:

Hardworking life,
No happiness in sight,
Wherever she will go,
Hardships will follow.

But there is a light,
In this kind of life,
A comforting arm,
Protecting from harm.

As obstacles draw near,
Support will lend it's ear,
Having less to bear,
The woman will persevere.

>>Use the following words in a story: little boy, torn page, market, cart

*Everyday is a boring day for a little boy named Po. However, that day was not an "everyday". "What do you mean?" you say? Well, like any other day, that day started off with his grocery shopping chore. He was strolling down the market alley with his cart, throwing in some whatsits, when he spotted a torn page. "What is this page?" He wondered. He was determined to find out and make this day, somewhat special. After rushing back home to leave his bought goods, he raced to the one place with the most books- the library. He ran up to the librarian at the counter and asked if any books were turned in with a ripped page. The puzzled lady replied with a confused look, "There were many of course, but we never know who do it..." she trailed off.

Topic: Technology makes the world smaller every day.

When observing the surroundings in the outside world, most people carry around a cellphone. In cafes, people are typing on their computers. These people are connecting to other people miles away, or even on the other side of the world. Technology has brought the world together, and made it seem small.

Nowadays, people all carry around mobile phones. It is handy, and can be used anywhere, anytime. Unlike old-fashioned phones, they do not need any cords or wires that connect to an electrical source. People can walk around with it freely, not worrying about being disconnected. With a press of a few numbers, one can contact another person who could be in a different continent. This conveniency allows people to be brought together and within reach.

Lately, technology has been developing at a monstrous speed, which includes the efficiency of the internet. Wherever and whenever, the internet is always available and close in reach. This easy-to-access internet has connected all different kinds of people. We can go into public chatting sites, chat rooms, socializing games, and so many more. People we would meet by going over seas, or driving for hour can connect in just seconds. Just by a few clicks, one can talk to another person who may be at the opposite end of the world.

Along with the internet came in the email. In the past, people took a long time to contact others. After many generations, posting mail was developed, and people could go to a post office to send off a letter to anyone, anywhere. However, people needed a faster, more instant and more convenient ways to contact others. The email was invented, and people could quickly access the internet to send a quick notice or letter to another person anywhere, privately. Having instant connection to another person, who can be anywhere has shortened the distance of people.

Another huge development was the airplane and cars. Trips that usually took hours or even days on foot, people have developed this new technology little by little to become efficient to society. When going someplace far, not a lot of work is needed. For example, going to the supermarket on foot would be a huge labor, including coming back with a load of goods. However, with the car, people can get there and return quickly, and store the goods in the car for the time being. People can get from one point to another in such a short period of time with today’s technology.

Without these new technologies, it would be impossible to meet people so many people or have a conversation in such a short amount of time. Also going places would be tiring, but with cars and airplanes, people can get to places they wouldn’t have even dreamed of. The technological developments have made the world seem so much smaller, allowing us to go anywhere or contact anyplace.

*Yviene can be defined as the corner girl. She has long flowing hair, which is mostly tied in two long braids, and hides her face with her overgrown fringe. Also, her desk is in the corner of the classroom, which makes it easy for people to forget her existence. However, people try to stay away from her. This is due to the rumor saying that she is able to tell the person who touched her's past. But, this is no rumor. Whenever she comes in contact with another person, she is able to see what that person did in the past. It could even go into years back. That is why she tries to avoid crowds. >>List 10 things you usually do on a rainy day. Pick one from your list and free write for 5 minutes.

*Sleep
*Read manhwa
*Do Homework
*Read a book
*Go on a walk with someone
*Check what's in the refrigerator
*Watch videos on youtube
*Video chat with friends

*Play random games (such as sudoku)

Check What's in the refrigerator:

Every time I am bored, I just take walks back and forth from my room to the refrigerator. Sometimes I don't even realize that I am doing it. It just became a habit. Especially on a raining day, I would like to have an apple. I would dash to the refrigerator, grab an apple, and sit back down on my chair to continue what I was doing. This could actually be a good habit. I would be taking a break, a little exercise, and get something healthy. However, I do not always get something to eat. I just peer inside the fridge and analyze what's there and what's missing. I would then tell my mom that we were out of whatever we used to have. I think my mom doesn't mind my walks for that reason...

*Last summer, I visited Cambodia with some mothers, fathers and their children from my church to go help the Cambodians as community service. This country used to be communist under the control of a violent dictator named Pol Pot. Cambodia was devastated by poverty. The first thing we did was to go to a school that was near a village to interact with the kids there. There were a few rocks here and there, and barely any grass. It was just plain, dried mud. Also, their appearance was shocking. Some babies, who looked about two or three, wore no clothes, but those who did, had on very tattered and old clothes. One common thing about them was that none of them had on shoes. They had to go around with no shoes to protect their feet from rocks and other harmful things on the ground. Kids, who were the same age as I, were around 20cm shorter- and skinny too. Their rib cages showed and their limbs were extremely thin, like twigs. They looked like as if they would break if we touched them. We were wrong.

Right before lunch, we younger volunteers were bored, so we tried to skip with the ropes that were tossed to the side of the yard of the school. For a few minutes everything was normal. We started sweating from the heat of movement and the sun, piercing us from above, while we jumped around. The moms were cooking some stew by the side and the sweet smell whipped over. I was turning the rope, sine I was wearing jeans that were hard to run and jump around in. Then, I noticed that some Cambodian kids, looking at us confused. I beckoned the small children to at least try jumping, even if they may be seriously bad at it. They joined in. They jumped. They jumped so high that they could have touched the sky. I gaped at them for a second, not believing what I have seen. They were actually jumping higher than we were, who were well fed and healthy. Even though they were in a world of poverty and starvation, the children still played and tried to be happy.

>>Blurp! Sloch! Snort! Write a paragraph incorporating at least ten onomatopoetic words. Onomatopoetic words are words that sound like what they mean.

*It was my first time to a farm. It smelled a little bit of dung, but I got so into the animals that I forgot about it. The cows mooed, welcoming me, and the mice ran in circles around my ankles, squeaking playfully. I went towards the pig barn. The pigs were rolling in mud, grunting and snorting with a satisfying look. Then, I peered over to the chicken's home. Some were laying eggs, some guarding them, and some just idly clucking around. Then from above, I heard a quack. Some strange looking birds flew past.

Journal Entry #22

>>You get what you pay for.

There is a controversy about the idea that people have to reap what they sow. However, this depends on the situation. In areas that humans cannot control, we cannot help what comes to us. However, in circumstances we can control, we get what we pay for.

Two years ago, I would take every precaution to keep my wallet from being stolen. I would put it in my locker and change the combination every time so that no one but myself could get in the locker. However, one day, when I got back from class, the locker was hanging open and my wallet was gone. I did all I could to prevent the wallet from being stolen, and if we live in a world where we are rewarded for what we do, then, my wallet wouldn’t be missing. However, we do live in a world that has unpredictable forces that we cannot control. In these circumstances, we have to stay positive and accept that the world is sometimes not fair.

Humans can control things such as studying for a test, or staying up late. When I was in 6th grade, I once stayed up until four in the morning, watching many movies on my newly bought computer. I knew that the next day was my semester finals, but I chose not to study. For that finals, I got a really low score, and I also had the pain of getting up the next morning. In this situation, I got what I deserved. I had nobody to blame but myself.

The idea of always getting what you pay for, doesn’t necessarily work in all situations. In circumstances that we cannot control, we cannot help the consequences. However, in situations we can control, we are responsible for the result. Therefore, it depends on the situation for getting what we pay for.

To wake me from this dream,
Yearning for my day to come.

Having a mission for an unrequited love.

When I was a Rose,

Waiting for a customer to give me away.

When I was a Rose,

*For me, keeping in within the page limit was hard. When I first wrote out the story, I was already past the limit when only half of the story was written out. I had to take out a lot of extra scenes and details. However, I liked that I could write about anything, in any style. It gave me a freedom to trail off in my thoughts. >>Write about a moment when you and another person (sibling, friend, parent, etc.) bonded.

*My cousin and I bonded one day when our parents were out. She had to come over because she was a little too young to be by herself alone at home. I was about 9 then, and my cousin, 6. We did not have such a good relationship, so we did our separate things. I was on my computer and she was watching television. Suddenly, the lights went out. It was a blackout. I didn't know this at first, but my cousin was scared of the dark. She didn't try to show it to me, but it seemed a little obvious to me. She was huddled up on the bed, so I climbed over, holding a candle that was in a jar. She shifted away from me, but I guess that was natural. That night was the first time we ever had a conversation that lasted more than a minute.

>>Write in the voice of a rope about to snap. At least one paragraph 5-8 sentences.

*My hand is slipping! Edith, hang on! The threads on my hand slowly ripped, one by one, separating my from my other half, Edith. Her threads were going numb, and slowly loosened, ripping our joined hands apart. I reach for her once more, but it seems that she cannot find my hand again. She is trailing, slowly, slowly, slowly again. SNAP. Now we may never be together again...

>>Reflect on the group work portion of your commercial project. How did you measure up? Do you believe that you contributed to the group as much as others? What was your role? Did you learn anything new about yourself and how you work in groups during this project?

*Since we were all close together, we communicated well with our ideas. Although I couldn't help as much as I would have liked, since I was sick, I participated in the main recording and making of the scenes in our project. I think I was mostly the tech person, because I put the scene cuts together and the song in the whole video. I learned that I could help even just a little even though I was a little sick, and since we all took our shares in the making of the video, it became a success.

>>Pick a character from a day time soap opera. Put him or her in a stranded commuter train. Write about what he or she is feeling or thinking at that moment.

*Character: Geum Jan Di

The subway is actually a very economical way to transport from one place to another. I don't get why that rich bum can't ride these. It's so cheap and with some skills, you can have a safe and comfortable trip! I don't understand why people of his kind has to ride a luxurious car just to go to the next town...

>>You can tell a lot about a person by what he or she says. Here are some things Grandma Dorothy always says:
• “You can never be to dressed up.”
• “A woman should never ask a man to dance.”
• “ He is quite a snappy dresser.”
• Based on these sentences, imagine what kind of person Grandma Dorothy is. Write a paragraph describing her. Feel free to use any or all of her quotations.

*Grandma Dorothy is too old fashioned. She thinks women should depend on men and such. I mean that so old! Nowadays, women can live their lives well without the pity of men. Also, why does she think that men would be attracted to beauty only? People can learn to love each other by their personalities too! And on top of that, her dressing style is too ugly. All that jewelry and fabric. At parties, she says, a woman shouldn't ask a man to dance. Ah sure grandma, isn't that too biased?! She is just too old fashioned!

>>Write from the point of view of a freshly scrubbed floor.

*It feels as if I just took off a layer of skin and dirt! I'm so refreshed! Sometimes when I feel the dirt from human feet and dust from the polluted air, I feel as if under a hundred layers of mattresses. I feel suffocated and heavy. But now after the whole scrubbing and brushing I feel anew!

>>Is there a cause you care about a lot? How far would you go to stand up for what you believe?

*People shouldn't kill each other in North and South Korea. I don't think that people should kill each other because they hate each other. I would stand up for this to the extent of risking my life, but I would help people who would risk their lives. I could be their support for shelter. or food.

>>Write about a time you hid from someone, or a time you disguised who you really were.

*I once hid from my brother because I broke his favorite bionicle toy. He loved it a lot and played with it everyday, so I wondered if I could play with it and get rid of my boredom. But somehow, the toy didn't move like when my brother played with it so I threw it across the room. The arm broke so I was scared he would be mad at me, so I hid in my closet. Luckily, he said that he was going to give it away, since my mom said that he had to give it away if he wanted the new bionicle that was to come out next week.

>>Recall an uplifting experience and write about it.

*I once went over to my sick grandmother at the hospital after she had a surgery. My friends from New Zealand and even America were all wishing her luck. When I told her that so many people loved her and wished her well. She smiled at me saying, I love you and all of them too. It was a very touching moment.

*If I could meet any author... who, why, what to talk about?

Since my childhood days in New Zealand, I always enjoyed Jacqueline Wilson’s children’s books. Her books were all written in a girl’s voice in primary school. At that time, I always fell into her stories and got absorbed in it, to the extent of reading the book until I nearly memorized it. Meeting Jacqueline Wilson would be a great honor. She stills writes the same types of books even now. It would be a blast to actually get her autograph and have a conversation with her about the thrills and hardships of being a child, through which I, who have had a relatively peaceful childhood, was able to see a different perspective of a girl my age.

Jacqueline Wilson showed me the excitement a child has as he or she grows up. In this short period of childhood, many things could happen, making the child grow up in a certain way. In my favorite childhood book, Candy Floss, a Jacqueline Wilson classic, the main character has to make decisions that could turn her life around. With the hardships, she also has her happy moments, making a quirky, new friend, having a stylish and kind new stepmom, and dying her hair pink. As a child, I was fascinated by the thrills the characters go through, since the most out-of-the-ordinary event in school as a child I had, was seeing a girl getting stung by a bumble bee. If I met Jacqueline Wilson, I would thank her for giving me the chance to expand my imagination and helping me realize that the world could be a colorful place to live in.

Wilson shows that there are hardships that complements the joy in a child’s life. She deals mostly with themes of betrayal, decision-making, and self-acceptance. Her creative ideas for girls problems in their lifetimes always got me wondering where she would get these ideas. In the story of Candy Floss, the main character’s dad sells greasy food in a roadside food vendor, and her mom lives with her new boyfriend and child. She has to decide who she was to live with. Also, she is betrayed by her best friend who was lured by the social status of her new friends. In these books, Wilson writes as if she was the girl herself. In photos, she looked pretty old, in her forties. I want to ask her how she could get these teenage problem ideas and talk in the point of view of that girl when she is already way past that age.

I have always been a fan of Jacqueline Wilson. Her name is something I wouldn’t forget for the rest of my life. She was one the major people who influenced my imagination through my childhood, reading her books. She is still alive, writing many books a year, so other than any author, I would most likely want to meet her.

>>Take two people who dislike each other and stick them in the backseat of a cab. What happens?

*At first it was a banana peel. I was sitting in the front seat of the cab, telling the driver where to go, when a banana peel landed on my head. I tried to ignore it, just putting the unsightly garbage in an empty plastic bag. Then I heard a short scream. A blood vessel popped up on my head. Then came a kick to the back of the chair. I lost my temper. I looked back, and there where my two younger sisters, pulling each other's hair, kicking, and throwing anything that came into their reach. I yelled. They stopped. And that was all.

*money
*stuffed animals
*loose change
*phone
*iPod
*mp3

*small pencils

--I like to save loose change. Sometimes, after buying few ice creams in the convenience store, I always have loose change. Sometimes, it varies to a 1000 won to 50 won. However, recently, I found that all this piles up to a lot of money! It has only been about two months, but I had enough to buy my yearbook!

It was November 31st, a cold, snowy day. Rain froze into small pieces of white crystals before landing delicately on the arms of the pine trees. The trees swayed in the icy wind, welcoming the holiday season. Fences encircled a small wooden cottage, closing off all connections with the outside world. The foot prints on the fluffy sheet of blankness led to the cottage. They were like huge paw prints of a bear, trudging along to find warmth in his little cave. The whiteness of the surroundings seemed to muffle all sounds, except the wailing of the wind.

*When I went to a summer camp last year, after breakfast, everyone rushed back to the dorms.
