Ulysses and his followers leave Lotus land. They are finding a land to get the food. When they arrived the land, he brought twelve crews. Unfortunately, in that land, one of the biggest cyclopes named, Polyphemus lives there. Polyphemus is a huge creature, one-eyed monster who loves to eat the human. Ulysses and the twelve people found the goat. The twelve followers ran toward the goat but Ulysses was very careful. Suddenly, Polyphemus comes and eats two people. After that, Polyphemus tries to eat another man but Ulysses stopped him by giving the wine. Polyphemus drank the wine and he liked it. He asked what is his name and Ulysses said he is "Nobody". Polyphemus said he will save him at the last. When Polyphemus slept, Ulysses gathered rest of his crews and told them his plan. After that, Ulysses gave the sign to attack. The ten followers hold Polyphemus' head and Ulysses stabbed his one eye. Ulysses and others escaped the cave by hiding underneath the goats. When Ulysses and other people arrived at the ship and got far away from the land, Ulysses told his real name to Polyphemus. Polyphemus got mad and prayed to God of Sea, Poseidon to cursed for him.

Responding to literature

Please respond to the following journal assignment on your wiki page.
1. Please describe Ulysses-what does he look like and act like? Try to be specific.

He had a great leadership. The reason I think he had a great leadership is because he always did his best to accomplish his works. Also, he was very brave to do everything to help people or save the people. Also, he was very clever and brave that he killed the cyclops, because everyone were afraid of him. I liked the way he escaped from the cyclops.

In the book, they did not mentioned the description for Ulysses, but I can imagine him by looking at the cover of the book. He is wearing the armor hat and he has lots of hair including beard. He has a big nose and mouth. He looks like an old man but looks brave and powerful. By looking at his picture, I think if he is angry, he will be really mad and he will be mean. But I think his looking match with war.

Ulysses is really brave and clever. He tried his best to win in Trojan War. He had many plans and came up with a really good one, which is the horse. Also, Ulysses is very wise person. In chapter 3, they talk about the flower lotus and people fall in sleep if they eat them. Ulysses knew that if he eats the flower lotus, he will fall in sleep. So, he did not eat them anymore. This shows that he is very smart and thoughtful.

Assignment for Mon., Sept. 7, 2009. Please answer the following prompt and put it on your wiki under journal/response to literature. Why did Ulysses' men betray him and open the bag of winds from Aeolus? What happened to those men?

Ulysses' men betrayed him and open the bag of winds from Aeolus because they did not know that the bag had a wind in it. Ulysses did not sleep for 9 days and did not eat any food or drink. When he saw Ithaca, he began to sleep. While he is sleeping, the two men appeared and discuss about the bag. Since Poseidon does not want Ulysses to go back to his home early, Poseidon appeared and made a clink sound to make the two men think it is coin sound. So, the two men thought it was the coin sound. They felt jealous and thought that they have to get some too. That is why they opened the bag of winds. In the book, they don't really talk what happen to men. The book says when Ulysses arrived at Aeolus' castle, Ulysses left the men on the beach and went into Aeolus' castle. When Aeolus saw him, he asked why he came back and Ulysses just answered that his crew betrayed him. Aeolus thought the gods do not like him so he did not give the wind again. So, Ulysses just went back to ship. (The men flew to the water)

What would it be like to live on Cannibal Beach? What problems would it create to have a quicker cycle of day and night? How do you think this kept Ulysses from discovering what the trees were? Post to the wiki/journal/response to literature.
I wouldn't enjoy living on cannibal beach because, since the day and night pass quickly, I can't do something very well. Also, since there are cannibals living on this island, I will get scared and want to go back to my home. On the cannibal beach, several weird things happened. For example, the day and night passed quickly. If the day and night passed quickly, it was hard for Ulysses and his men to look out foods, make the shelter quickly. This kept Ulysses from discovering what the trees were too. Ulysses couldn't see this very well and that is why he thought it was a tree, but when he climbed up the object, he found out it was a giant.

Journal Entry #4 Ulysses - In Chap. 9,The Wandering Rocks, Ulysses has to decide what to do for himself. All of the advice that he has been given turns out to be useless. What does he decide to do? Have you ever been in a situation that required you to make an important decision on you own? How did you decide what to do?
In chapter 9, Ulysses thinks Ajax and Achilles are better at fighting than thinking. He cannot trust Elpenor too. Since they are all ghost, they like to frighten people. So at last, he says he is going to Ithaca, ignoring the three ghosts' advice. When I was young, I fought with my best friend. Unfortunately, I had to go to camp with her next day. I had to decide if I am going camp with her or stay at home and relax. It was hard to make a decision. At last, I decide to go to the camp with her even though I fought with her. The reason is at the camp, we can compromise, make a good memory and also get familiar with her again.

Journal Entry #5-Ulysses has gone through much physical and mental hardship. Through all of this he has been determined to return to Itacha. What people and/or places in your life would you be willing to fight as hard as Ulysses to get to/see. Explain your answer.
I can fight for my sister. She is always nice to me and help me if I have any problems. Even though, I fight with my sister many times, I like my sister more than anything. Whenever I have any concerns or problems, usually, I don't tell my mother or father, because I feel uncomfortable. But, if I stay with my sister, she listens carefully, try to solve it together and try to understand my mind. If my sister doesn't exist, I will be sad and feel bad.

#6 I think this story suggest you can learn and communicate even though they are from other countries, and have different cultures. Also, they help each other too.
