1. Please describe Ulysses-what does he look like and act like? Try to be specific.
From the cover of the book, I can see that he has brown hair, and brown mustache. And I can see that Ulysses has no expression on his face, which makes him looks a little scary to me. He looks like he is having many troubles. And I think he is going through many obstacles.
I think Ulysses is an endurance man. No matter how much difficulties he faces, he does his best to overcome with them. He does not give up. I think he keeps his mind with his hope; to go back to his family and live happily again.
Ulysses seems to fight really well. If he is not, he would probably have not been able to win the war. However unfortunately, he had angered some gods which brought him bad luck. It made him to travel for years and years on the sea, to go back to his home and meet his family again.
Summary of Chapter 4
Ulysses and his men landed on an island. Cyclopes live there, the huge violent creatures, tall as a tree, and each with one eye in the middle of his forehead. Ulysses and his people meet Polyphemus, the largest and the fiercest of all the Cyclopes. He live in a huge cage, a large rock being the door of the cave. Ulysses and his men realizes that the cave is opened, so they go in and sees the huge fireplace and the eight goats spitted like sparrows. They started to eat. Soon after that, Polyphemus comes in, eats two of Ulysses's man. Ulysses thinks of a idea, he gives Polyphemus wine to drink, until he got sleep. He thrust his sword into the fire. He and his men, together stabbed the glowing spike into the giant's eye. He goes blind, and using that time, Ulysses and his men go under the bellies of the rams, so that the giant will think the man as the goats. They safely escape. When Polyphemus finally realizes that it was Ulysses who had made him go blind, he prays to Poseidon, the god of the Sea, to punish Ulysses.
Why did Ulysses' men betray him and open the bag of winds from Aeolus? What happened to those men?
Ulysses' men got curious because Ulysses had been guarding the leather bag for all night and days. And the two men thought Ulysses did not want them to see what was inside the bag because it's something very important. So, thinking that it is some kind of gold, they opened it. Later because of the strong wind, they die.
What would it be like to live on the Cannibal Beach? What problems would it create to have a quicker cycle of day and night? How do you think this kept Ulysses from discovering what the trees were?
I think the time will seems to be really fast. It was too dark for Ulysses and his men to recognize the 'tree' as a giant. The darkness helped Ulysses, because when he realized that the 'tree' wasn't a tree, but was a giant, it was actually sleeping, which was very lucky to Ulysses as he would not be eaten by the giant like his other men.
In Chap. 9,The Wandering Rocks, Ulysses has to decide what to do for himself. All of the advice that he has been given turns out to be useless. What does he decide to do? Have you ever been in a situation that required you to make an important decision on you own? How did you decide what to do?
Ulysses found out that all the advices that he had been given, turns out to be useless. Eventually, he decides to turn his boat toward North, heading to the Sun Titan. I have been in a situation that required me to make an "important" decision of my own. It happens to me almost every day, I will be in a dilemma, whether to finish up my homework first, or to watch a television program first. Almost every time, I would decide to finish up my homework first so that I would be more relaxed while watching the television program after finishing up my homework.
Journal Entry #5
Ulysses has gone through much physical and mental hardship. Through all of this he
has been determined to return to Itacha. What people and/or places in your life would
you be willing to fight as hard as Ulysses to get to/see. Explain your answer.
I think I would be able to fight as hard as Ulysses for my family. Whenever I faces hardships, there are always there for me. They are the only ones that understands me and the only ones who would always stand to my side.
